Lord's Prayer I: Father, Name, Kingdom, and Will

Sunday, December 6, 2026

Big Question

Why does Jesus teach His baptized children to pray Our Father?

What Does the Catechism Say?

Introduction and Petitions 1-3

What does this mean?

Jesus invites His children to call upon the Father with confidence and to ask that God's name, kingdom, and gracious will shape their lives.

Official Book of Concord text from Concordia Publishing House.

Law

What truth does God's Word expose?

We misuse God's name, resist His kingdom and will, and often turn prayer into performance or neglect.

Gospel

What does Christ give or promise?

Jesus gives us His own words and invites us to approach the Father with childlike confidence.

Jesus at the Center

Because the Son brings us to the Father, prayer rests on Christ's promise rather than our skill or spiritual mood.

In Real Life

Faith where life actually happens.

  • Pray for God's name, kingdom, and will in family, school, church, and community life.
  • Use the Lord's Prayer when your own words are hard to find.

Catechism in Real Life

Week 3Lord's Prayer, Introduction and Petitions 1-3Pages 98-104

Look for: Jesus' invitation to pray with childlike trust instead of performing spirituality.

  • Jesus gives the words of prayer.
  • Baptized children may approach the Father confidently.
  • Prayer asks that God's name, kingdom, and will shape daily life.

The Skit Guys - How to Pray

This prayer-focused skit gives students a starting point for discussing performance, distraction, and Jesus' gift of trustworthy words for prayer.

Video resources support Scripture, the Small Catechism, pastoral teaching, and family conversation. They do not replace them.

Talk About It

Questions for honest conversation.

  1. What makes childlike confidence different from carelessness?
  2. Where do you most need God's will to be done?

At the Kitchen Table

Choose one petition and turn it into a prayer for family, school, church, and community.

Ten thoughtful minutes is plenty. Listen before correcting, welcome honest questions, and end in prayer.
