Ten Commandments I: Loving and Trusting God

Sunday, September 20, 2026

Big Question

What does it mean to fear, love, and trust God above all things?

What Does the Catechism Say?

Commandments 1-3 and Luther's explanations

What does this mean?

The First through Third Commandments teach us to fear, love, and trust God above all things, honor His name, and gladly hear His Word.

Official Book of Concord text from Concordia Publishing House.

Law

What truth does God's Word expose?

The first commandments uncover the people, powers, habits, and desires that receive the trust owed to God.

Gospel

What does Christ give or promise?

Christ fulfills God's Law for us and gives mercy to sinners whose trust is divided.

Jesus at the Center

The Commandments do not become a ladder to God. They expose our need and drive us to the Savior who has fulfilled them.

In Real Life

Faith where life actually happens.

  • Consider how phones, success, relationships, or comfort can become objects of deepest trust.
  • Connect worship and God's name to the gifts received in the Divine Service.

Catechism in Real Life

Week 1Ten Commandments, Commandments 1-3Pages 31-41

Look for: How God's good Law reveals false trust and directs us toward Christ's mercy.

  • God speaks as the rescuing God.
  • The Law acts as curb, mirror, and guide.
  • Christian obedience grows from mercy, not from earning favor.
Review

Read the first three commandments and their explanations aloud.

Biblical Law

This overview places biblical Law within God's larger story and helps frame the first commandments without treating them as isolated rules.

Video resources support Scripture, the Small Catechism, pastoral teaching, and family conversation. They do not replace them.

Talk About It

Questions for honest conversation.

  1. What good thing can quietly become an idol?
  2. How do the first three commandments protect our relationship with God?

At the Kitchen Table

What good thing can quietly become an idol by receiving our deepest trust?

Ten thoughtful minutes is plenty. Listen before correcting, welcome honest questions, and end in prayer.
