Ten Commandments II: Loving the Neighbor

Sunday, October 4, 2026

Big Question

How does God's Law teach us to protect and serve our neighbor?

What Does the Catechism Say?

Commandments 4-10 and Luther's explanations

What does this mean?

The Fourth through Tenth Commandments teach concrete love for the neighbor in authority, life, marriage, possessions, reputation, and contentment.

Official Book of Concord text from Concordia Publishing House.

Law

What truth does God's Word expose?

The commandments name concrete harm done through contempt, lust, dishonesty, greed, false witness, and discontent.

Gospel

What does Christ give or promise?

Christ bears the judgment our sin deserves, forgives us, and frees us to seek the neighbor's good.

Jesus at the Center

Jesus' mercy moves us outward, from confession and forgiveness toward active love for the people God places near us.

In Real Life

Faith where life actually happens.

  • Apply the commandments to school, friendships, family, technology, reputation, possessions, and sexuality.
  • Ask not only what harm to avoid, but what good the neighbor needs.

Talk About It

Questions for honest conversation.

  1. Which commandment most clearly touches life online?
  2. What positive action can you take for a neighbor this week?

At the Kitchen Table

Choose one commandment. What positive action does it call us to take for our neighbor?

Ten thoughtful minutes is plenty. Listen before correcting, welcome honest questions, and end in prayer.
